Here is what seems my 1000th op-ed on bilingual education, solicited from me a couple of days ago by National Review, the leading publication of the conservative movement.
As in the past, I express my exasperation that almost no prominent national Republicans (or Democrats for that matter) will support a clear policy of teaching immigrant children English in public schools, despite near 80% polling support among immigrants and non-immigrants alike and banner-headlines touting the educational success of Prop. 227 in California.
It’s obviously too much to expect politicians to do something both right and popular, but one might at least occasionally expect them to consider doing something right and tremendously, overwhelmingly popular…
