Here are three articles from the Thursday 11/6/97 opinion page of the San Jose Mercury News, which was entirely devoted to our “English for Children” initiative. I was particularly pleased by the favorable coverage since until about five weeks ago, the Mercury (my hometown paper) had been extremely hostile. Joanne Jacob’s friendly column is especially nice, since she’s been regarded as one of the strongest editorial supporters of the SB 6 Alpert-Firestone bill. You should also enjoy the op-ed by Lisa Dilles, a 20-year veteran bilingual teacher who admits that in all that time she’s never seen clear evidence that the system actually worked.
